Sample Ideas to Start Prayer For Others

There is a lot of information on this site. No matter what your background, you should find some inspiration. At the same time, it is recognized that people may feel overwhelmed and not know where to start. Below is a one-pager you can save (and maybe print out), with ideas, should walking around your neighborhood seem a bit intimidating at first. Remember, the goal is to start praying. Don't worry about doing it "perfectly". Just do it faithfully.

Sample Prayer Cards to Include Children

A great way to begin building the habit of praying for others in children is to download the below pdf file. You can keep it as one sheet, or help your child to cut the page into 9 smaller 'prayer cards'. Each card has an image and a suggestion of what to pray for when your children see the various people depicted. You could always keep the printout in your car as well. It can be a good discussion-starter for your children too.

For those who desire a more detailed plan

Week 1

  • Each day, after every meal, pray for those who are hungering for more than what this life is offering them. Pray that they see the emptiness of the things they are trying to fill the God-shaped hole in their heart with, and they know that day the sound of God's voice calling to them, and respond with a "yes" to Him.

Week 2

[In addition to continuing the Week 1 prayers]

  • Make a commitment to pray for at least one person in each building or location outside the house that you are in each day. Pray that they see anywhere in their lives where they have intentionally or unintentionally swallowed the lies of the world and the devil, and by God's grace they reject those lies and embrace His Truth.
  • If you are home-bound and don't get out, pick a person in the news to pray for. Pray for them every day of the week.

Week 3

[In addition to continuing the Week 1 & 2 prayers]

  • Each night before bed, bring to mind a family member who has passed on. Pray to Jesus that at the hour of their death, they accepted all the grace and mercy Jesus had for them. Pray that their time of purgation would be complete, and that they are now enjoying the beatific vision (direct communion with God).

Week 4

[In addition to continuing the Week 1 & 2 & 3 prayers]

  • If you are like many people who wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, before going back to bed, offer intercession for someone who at that time is considering suicide. Pray that the Holy Spirit would bring them hope, and that they would, by God's grace, not give in to the despair that the devil would be bringing to them.
  • If you don't wake up in the middle of the night, then first thing in the morning when you awake, after thanking God the Father for the gift of life and health this new day, pray for those women who are planning to have an abortion that day. Pray that they would know that they are already a mother, called to love their unborn child. Pray that they would see through the lies that make them feel compelled to kill their unborn child. Pray that they would be put in touch with those who can help her to successfully carry her child to term, and that through this experience she would draw closer to Jesus.
